ALLY CHOW

Our client of Two Hat calibre, Trent Scarr and his wife, Leisha Novy, envisioned an Asian fused restaurant with an urban fun environment. From that, we brought in different elements of Asian cultures with a focus on Asian gardens to deliver a one-of-a-kind ambience & interior.

We had designed the restaurant with a dark and moody feel so when we discovered the hardwood recycled door with its beautiful antique emerald green glass, we knew we had to carve them into the circular opening. This is a part of the process that can’t be drawn into the original plans as finding these wonderful pieces makes the process that much more unique.

On the front face, a traditional Japanese technique called Shou-Sugi-Ban, was used where the timber is burnt to a chard finish. We found the best result was to get it to the point of blistering which gave it the most amazing texture. The two large windows we custom-made in raw steel which worked by sash chords. We left the sash cords and weights visible as they added a really nice feature.

Stepping inside we wanted the customer to be drawn to the aesthetic feel so they felt engaged to the whole experience from the moment they walked in. We had the concrete walls textured with paint by using rags to layer the paint, which gave a very desirable effect.

To keep the garden feel inside, we needed many outdoor elements brought in, one of which we achieved by using hardwood timber beams to create the pergola. This pergola was then draped in vines, plants and hanging pendants. The bar we felt needed to keep more of those raw elements, so timber tree slabs were formed in such a way they connected and wrapped continually around the bar face with the light casting from the underside of the bar to create interesting shadows amongst the timber.
