Double Barrel Kitchen
We were approached by the owners to create an inviting cafe with age and character. Our role was to design and craft a unique and warm venue.
First, we looked at the front entrance and wanted this to be warm and inviting. Leaving most of the existing framing was a good idea as it kept the cost down to allow money to be well spent in other areas. We then added the existing framing with recycled timbers and positioned the doorway in the centre which formed the opportunity for two bifold windows either side, allowing for better seating arrangements.
There was no shortage of recycled timber on this project, therefore, lending to many treasure hunt expeditions trying to source these wonderful pieces.
We hung timber beams above the bar creating an added form which was dressed with pendant lighting and chain. This part really evolved as it grew into something very different from the original concept but something we all agreed was worth the extra effort.
The counter was wrapped in steel and salt applied to rust the surface to add to the weathered look we were chasing. There were many areas of heartfelt detail in this project but there was one spot we knew needed that added bit of attention. Owen had bought a lovely rustic ladder at the start of the project and told the client that it might come into the design at some point and so it did. It was cut into pieces then fixed back together in an unusual formation with vines and chains wrapped through it. The clients and myself were all very happy with the outcome of this project.
