We were approached by Kozo Mitsuyama to design and develop his first restaurant. Inspired and named by his home town in Nagasaki, Goto is based in the bustling, up and coming commercial area of Southport.
Wanting to keep the design modern and minimal with clean lines, we kept the colour palette small using natural pine and concrete based products.
We wanted a concrete feel on the walls and happened to stumble across a beautiful tile made from volcanic rock which was exactly what we were after. We used this tile throughout the restaurant on the walls and the fascia of the bar. Pine was used throughout the restaurant to create all the structure from the tables, chairs, bar tops, and other large structural elements.
With the design of the tables we wanted to do something we hadn’t seen anywhere else. After a thoughtful process we created a big central triangular table which give a wonderful communal feel. The remaining tables were suspended from the ceiling by black steel. There was a lot of structure work to create the desired outcome but with much effort comes great reward.
To keep with the design of minimalism, cast lighting was used throughout the restaurant to highlight the structural features to make those the focus of ones eye. Throughout this project we worked with Gabriel Celuque, Director of Hover Creative, who has worked alongside us on many projects including Ally Chow and Two Wise Fish, just to name a few. Hover Creative are a brand and web design company so the first step with Gabriel was to exchange our design concepts as we wanted to keep a small colour palette for the client to work with so the minimal feel was understood throughout all aspects of the restaurant.
