Elements of importance from the design perspective were to be very mindful and respectful of the local environment, the building itself with its history and charm, and the past of Murrwillumbah meanwhile bringing an authentic Japanese moment of experience.
Murrwillumbah has a very strong history of timber being transported down the river in times of old, so using this was a great choice of material, along with rocks and boulders. With these very heavy elements, we chose nice fabrics to soften the space, creating a natural movement while situating the height of the ceilings in the booth areas.
The lighting was an area that needed to complement its backdrop with a very cohesive nature, so positioning and choosing lighting that felt intimate was a perfect choice.
I really do feel that when spending time in this venue, it has a very grounding nature, just like nature itself, so when you leave, you leave feeling calm and peaceful, always belonging to return.
